The price of machine-made carpets in Iran has increased between 50 to 100 percent, said the head of the Union for Machine Made Carpet Sellers.
"The export and rise of USD rate have caused the increase of many commodities including carpet, and producers are tempted to sell their products based on USD rate that is equal to 300,000 rials," said Mohammad Kamalian, Trend reports citing ILNA.
"While the increase of carpet price is insignificant for foreign customers it has put pressures on domestic customers," he added.
"The export's foreign currency revenue rarely returns to the economic cycle, most carpet factories sell their products to exporters based on 300,000 rials per dollar exchange rate and now they are implementing the same policy for the domestic market that have caused the increase of machine-made carpet," he noted.
"If there is a ban on carpet exports, the prices would reduce, while export of commodities such as petrochemicals are profitable and could create revenues," he said.
"Iran's machine-made carpet is currently being exported to Africa and the Persian Gulf countries since the price is insignificant for foreign buyers," he stated.
