Onion exports from Georgia up, while imports decrease

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 21

Onion exports from Georgia increased, while imports decreased in the first quarter of 2021, Trend reports via the Georgia National Statistical Office (Geostat).

According to the National Statistical Office, in the first three months of 2021, Georgia bought 5,688 tons of onions ($3.078 million) that is 37 percent less than in the same period of last year. In the first three months of the previous year, 9,031 tons of onions worth $5.688 million were imported to Georgia.

Top-3 importer countries in 3 months of 2021:

Turkey - 5,472 tons ($1.652 million)

Russia - 128 tons ($39,500)

Ukraine - 64.7 tons ($19,600).

Unlike imports, in the first quarter much more onions were exported from Georgia than in 3 months of the previous year. Nevertheless, the product’s export rate is still minimal. In the first 3 months of 2021, 319 tons of onions worth $76,600 were exported, while in the first quarter of last year, 9.2 tons worth $10,000.

It’s worth mentioning that in 3 months of the current year, Georgia sold onions in only 2 countries:

Armenia - 311 tons ($69,600)

Russia - 7.8 tons - ($7,000).
