Iran's Cabinet of Ministers has agreed to export 500,000 head of livestock, an official of Nomads Affairs Organization of Iran Fazl Khorram said, Trend reports citing Mehr News Agency.

According to him, the Union of Nomadic Cooperatives of Iranian Mobile Livestock Breeders offered the Iranian cabinet to export 1 million head of livestock.

“In exchange for the livestock to be exported, animal feed will be imported and supplied to the nomads. Thus, it will help to prevent the problems caused by drought in the areas inhabited by nomads,” the official added.

Khorram noted that animal feed in the areas inhabited by nomads in Iran decreased by about 1.6 million tons in the current Iranian year (from March 21, 2021 through March 20, 2022).

The official stressed that so far, 100,000 tons of animal feed have been supplied to the nomads.

Khorram said that nomads in Iran provide 25-30 percent of the country's red meat with 22.4 million head of livestock.

As reported, more than 1.1 million nomads inside 246,000 families live in Iran. About 790,000 hectares of land in the country are at the disposal of nomads. About 28 percent of small ruminants and 4 percent of cattle In Iran's livestock sector belong to nomads. Thus, 9.7 million head of livestock are put up for sale annually at the market by nomads.
