TEHRAN, Iran, Sep. 28

Trend:

Iran's Competition Council defends the lifting of the ban on the import of cars, noting that the plan leads to produce the best quality car at a reasonable price, Trend reports citing IRNA.

The Iranian government has banned the import of cars for the past two years. Iranian lawmakers passed a motion that will see the year-long ban on import of cars lifted conditionally, but the Guardian Council has rejected an amendment Car Market Organization Bill.

The head of Iran's Competition Council Reza Shiva believes that the competitive market leads to improve quality and productivity of the car industry.

"A monopolistic market will push down the overall level of quality and technology," he said.

He went on to announce that the Council, in interaction with the parliament and the Expediency Council, seeks to eliminate the car monopoly in the market.

Shiva advised the import of mass-volume, affordable cars into the country.

"Lifting car import ban will not contradict with the resistance economy policy," he said.

He noted that in the last few years, the Competition Council has repeatedly asked the Cabinet of Ministers to liberalize the import of mass-volume cars in order to encourage competition in the country's car market.

"The domestic carmakers have repeatedly agreed to the plan," Shiva indicated.
