Turkmenistan is actively preparing for the opening of the Turkmen-Uzbek border trade zone, Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister Chary Gylyjov said during a government meeting, Trend reports via Arzuw News.
Currently, Turkmenistan's Trade and Foreign Economic Relations Ministry is working on issues such as determining the location of the border trade zone, preparing schemes of objects and drawings for construction, as well as developing a draft regulation on interstate and regional wholesale trade, commodity control, and transit.
The agreement on the establishment of border trade zone between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan was signed as a result of the outcomes of the two countries' leaders' meetings, which took place in Tashkent on October 5, 2021.
The trade zone aims to expand cooperation between neighboring states' border territories - Turkmenistan's Lebap and Dashoguz regions and Uzbekistan's Khorezm and Bukhara regions.
Currently, some 160 enterprises with a share of the Turkmen capital are operating in Uzbekistan.
The trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan has tripled in the last four years. The country increased its exports to Uzbekistan by more than 30 percent in January-November 2021.
Earlier, at the meeting of the Turkmen-Uzbek intergovernmental commission, the parties expressed a desire to increase trade volume to $1 billion.
