Turkmenistan reveals areas to be sown for cotton

Turkmenistan plans to allocate 580,000 hectares of land for cotton sowing across the country this year, Esenmyrat Orazgeldiev, Deputy Prime Minister said, Trend reports citing to Business Turkmenistan.

According to him, work is currently underway to prepare fields for cotton sowing, with 244,411 hectares already plowed.

Previously it was reported that Turkmenistan intends to increase land for sowing potatoes and vegetables and melons, as well as increase the production of cocoons by 200 tons. For this purpose, it is planned to reduce cotton cultivation by 40,000 hectares per year, from the regular 620,000 hectares.

Cotton farming is a key component of Turkmenistan's agro-industrial complex. The country's natural conditions favor the cultivation of medium and fine staple cotton varieties.

The Central Asian country is one of the top ten cotton producers in the world supplying its product to China, Russia, the UK, South Korea, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Singapore, Ukraine, and the Baltic countries.

The country is investing millions of dollars in the sector to expand the cotton industry and build textile factories.

Turkmenistan harvested 1.25 million tons of cotton in 2021.
