Joint projects - good chance for Azerbaijan, Iran to develop relations further, MP says

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Jan. 27

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The implementation of joint projects between Azerbaijan and Iran will give a positive impetus to the development of relations between the two countries, Iranian MP Gholamreza Marhaba told Trend.

According to the MP, Iran and Azerbaijan have cultural, historical and religious ties and enough potential for cooperation. Yet, there's plenty of potential left.

“There are many joint projects between the two countries. The launch of the construction of a new bridge over the Astarachay River on the border between Azerbaijan and Iran, the completion of the Astara railway terminal and the connection of the Qazvin-Rasht highway to Azerbaijan are three major ones,” he added.

Marhaba noted that the existing bridge over the Astarachay River between the two countries is an old bridge. All traffic in direction to the North-South and vice versa, transit of goods to the CIS countries via Iran is carried out through the existing bridge. Due to the expiration date of the bridge, there are restrictions on the movement of trucks.

The MP also said that the Iranian government is focusing on the completion of the construction of the Astara railway terminal. A total of $60 million is to be spent for the construction of the terminal. About $22 million has been spent so far. It is hoped that the construction of the terminal will be completed soon.

As for the connection of the Qazvin-Rasht highway to the Iran’s Astara city and then to Azerbaijan Marhaba stressed that it also is one of the joint projects between the two countries. A number of steps have been taken in this regard.

On January 25, 2022, the foundation of a new bridge over the Astarachay River on the border of Azerbaijan-Iran was laid. The construction of the 89-meter-long and 30-meter-wide bridge is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Astara railway terminal is located in the Iran’s Astara city on an area of 35 hectares, 1.4 km from the Azerbaijan-Iran border.

According to the intergovernmental agreement between Azerbaijan and Iran, the construction of the terminal began in 2017. The Astara railway terminal, built by Azerbaijan Railways, has been leased to Azerbaijan for 25 years.

Despite the ongoing construction of the Astara terminal, several parts of the terminal have already been set for operation, and from the beginning of 2018, transshipment operations have been carried out there.
