By Amina Nazarli - Trend:
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed steps to implement the transboundary demo Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex (THC) project, which aims to address the Central Asian region's urgent problem of increased reservoir siltation, Trend reports citing Arzuw News.
This was discussed at a meeting held as part of the second phase of the Central Asia Nexus Dialogue Project, aiming to facilitate sustainable and climate-resilient investments for increased water, energy, food security and ecosystems in Central Asia.
Turkmen State Committee for Water Resources and Uzbek Water Resources Ministry proposed the Tuyamuyun hydroelectric complex as a demo project.
Because of increased silting of reservoirs, the technical capabilities for water accumulation, conservation, and regulation required by all users of THC resources in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are severely limited.
The project aims to reduce the intensity of silting in the run-of-river reservoir by implementing modern and sustainable technical solutions that will benefit both countries.
The THC project, supported by the European Union and the Laboratory of Innovations for the Central Asian Water Sector, started in January 2021.
The project entails carrying out a comprehensive assessment and analysis of territories, measuring siltation volumes, drawing on international experience in this field, and preparing an investment proposal for THC.
It is intended, in particular, to organize mutual cooperation with the global network of financial experts at the United Nations for Industrial Development (UNIDO), as well as a partnership in the field of renewable energy sources.
