TEHRAN, Iran, May 23. Iran has banned rice import from Thailand due to lack of demand from the domestic market, said the Secretary of Rice Importers Association Massih Keshavarz, Trend reports citing ILNA.
"Following Russia and Ukraine conflict, the price of imported rice will possibly increase by 10 percent and Iran should import rice from various countries including Pakistan and India that have competitive prices," he said.
Keshavarz pointed out that the Iranian government's policy to end subsidized foreign currency for rice imports will lead to more transparent prices.
He went on to say that a new rate for the import of rice has not been announced by the government and some of the imported rice cargos are still being stored at the customs.
According to the official, Iran has imported 308,862 tons of rice in the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2022).
