BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 29. Overall, 2,850 tons of bony fish worth 5.65 trillion rials (about $135 million) were caught in the Caspian Sea in Iran’s Mazandaran Province from the beginning of the current fishing season from the Caspian Sea in Iran (October 9, 2022) to March 20, 2023, Director General of the Iran Fisheries Organization for Mazandaran Province Ghasem Karimzadeh said, Trend reports referring to the organization.
This is an increase of 329 in value and 84 percent in volume compared to the same period in the preceding Iranian year, according to Karimzadeh.
“Of the mentioned volume, 51 percent accounted for mullet, 36 percent for Caspian kutum, 11 percent for carp, and 2 percent for other fishes,” he added.
The director general noted that mullet fishing in the province for the reporting period increased by 261 percent, while Caspian kutum fishing by 32 percent compared to the previous season.
Generally, 50 fishing companies and about 4,000 fishermen work in the province. Fishing has a fundamental role in the income and livelihood of the population in Mazandaran Province. Fishing in the Caspian Sea in Iran begins in early October and lasts until April 20.
