Porsche confirms Cayenne hybrids

(autoinsidernews) - Porsche has confirmed rumors that it will be producing a hybrid version of the Cayenne. Porsche Australia's managing director, Michael Winkler, said at the Melbourne motor show that the Cayenne hybrid will be available by 2009 and that it would be available in Australia.

Winkler said that the gas-electric hybrid system is still in development, and will it will only be installed in the Cayenne 4WD, it is not limited to any one type of engine.

"With the technical package of the hybrid, we can pick and choose the engines," says Winkler. "It will be available throughout the [ Cayenne] range, and not just on a flagship model."

While there is no word if the hybrid system would find its way into other Porsche products, the forthcoming Panamera seems to be a likely candidate, since it will share some of its powertrain components with the Cayenne.
