Azerbaijani Transport Ministry Proposed EU to Maintain Implementation of State Programme for Modernization of Azerbaijan’s Railway Infrastructure

Azerbaijan, Baku/ Trend , corr. I. Khalilova/ The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry has proposed that the European Commission take part in the implementation of the State Programme for Modernization of Azerbaijan's Railway Infrastructure for 2007-2010, which is under approval from Azerbaijani cabinet Ministers, a source at the Ministry has told Trend today. The EU will review possibilities on financing work and activities on improvement of the railway network of the country. The Transport Ministry has also showed its interest to the EU maintaining the project on reconstruction of the railway communication on the route - Baku-Tbilisi-Kars. The European party pledged to review this proposal put forward by Azerbaijan.

The total value of the mentioned project is estimated at over $400 mln. The Azerbaijani Government has taken the financing of the Georgian section of the railway upon itself. Some $200 mln is expected to be granted from SOFAZ (State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan) for these aims.

The projects, included in the State Programme are estimated at over $1 bln. These and other issues were discussed during the second sitting of the EU-Azerbaijan Sub-Committee for Energy and Transport.
