Azerbaijani SOCAR, Russian Gazprom negotiate gas supply

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec.17 / Trend , S.Aliyev/ Rovnag Abdullayev, President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), and Alexei Miller, Chairman of the Russian Gazprom, discussed strategic cooperation on supply of Azerbaijani gas to the Russian market, said an oil industry source. The information was not officially confirmed.

It was decided at the meeting to continue talks on the issue in January next year, said the source.

Today, Azerbaijan is considering export of its gas produced in SOCAR fields (this year the company will extract about 8bln cu m of gas). Possible gas export directions at the second stage of development of the Shah Deniz gas field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea are being discussed (the field is being developed by a consortium of foreign companies with participation of SOCAR).

Peak production at the first stage of the project will make up 8.6bln cu m of gas per year. The second stage production is expected to be at least the same. Total gas reserves of the Shah Deniz are estimated at 1.2trln cu m.
