The European Parliament is adopting blueprints for the EU's future energy strategy.
The document will be discussed at an EU meeting on March 19-20.
The blueprints were adopted with 406 votes in favor, 168 votes against and 87 abstentions.
The plan provides an outline on nuclear energy in the EU and identifies climate objectives to be achieved by 2050, including reducing greenhouse gases by 80 percent.
The document stated that in the aftermath of the gas crisis between Ukraine and Russia, which left many EU citizens without heat this winter, "gas and electricity relations must be developed in the north-south corridor with Central and Southeastern Europe." The EU parliamentarians believe that the EU, Russia and Ukraine must sign a tripartite agreement to secure gas supplies. Europe currently imports 50 percent of its energy via the Ukraine, and the figure may increase to 70 percent by 2030.
The parliament supports projects diversifying supply routes and sources, such as the Nabucco, Turkey-Greece-Italy (TGI) and South Stream pipelines.
Countries in the Caspian region such as Uzbekistan and Iran could represent a significant supply source for Europe.
The parliamentarians support drafts related to developing wind energy in the North Sea, as well as atom energy.
