Blast in apartment building in Azerbaijan’s capital (UPDATED 3 – comment of gas emergency service) (video)

A blast took place in the apartment building in Gara Garayev str. 96, apt. 71, Nizami district of Baku city on Feb. 28. At least one man was wounded, a source at Nizami Prosecutor's Office told Trend earlier.

The blast resulted from gas leak, fire security service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Azerbaijan told Trend . Fire did not take place on the scene.

The blast wounded Sanikov Alexander, 1989, Anar Abiyev, investigator of Nizami Prosecutor's Office, told Trend . The apartment belongs to Sanikova Vera Alexanderovna, mother of wounded. 

According to the initial information, the blast resulted from gas leak in bathroom, and other reasons for blast are being investigated, Abiyev said.  

Investigation is being carried out. 

According to the preliminary version, the reason for today's blast in the apartment building in Baku became the water-heating gas geyser, turning on of which caused blast of consumer gas, a source in gas emergency service of Nizami district told Trend .

"We already turned off the gas supply of the block of building, in which the blast occurred. Gas leak in the geyser, when it was turned on, caused the blast," the same source said.

The source said that the planning was also broke in this apartment, there were problems with the ventilation system.

The cold weather in Baku increased the number of blasts resulting from domestic gas, which caused numerous deaths. This is already the fifth blast in the capital.

The last incident in Baku took place on Jan. 16. The blast fully destroyed the fourth and fifth floors of one block of the five-storey apartment building, as well as killed five people and wounded ten people.
