SOCAR to double capacity of largest underground gas storage facilities in Azerbaijan by April

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) continues to work to expand the active capacity of the Kalmaz gas storage facility from 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas up to 2.4 billion cubic meters, SOCAR said.

Based on the project, the gas storage's distribution system will consist of 100 wells. Gas compressor station consisting of 16 units will be modernized as part of the project. The company also will install two units.

In October 2009, the trust launched construction of the second pipeline length 46 kilometers and with a capacity of 5-6 million cubic meters of gas per day to provide the gas storage.

This pipeline consists of two parts. Its first part begins at the Sangachal terminal, which receives gas produced at the Shah Deniz field. The second part of the pipeline connects it with the Kalmaz storage facility.

All work to expand the storage facilities will be completed in April 2010.
