Azerbaijan, Baku, May 31 / Trend /
Azerbaijan will fulfil its obligations to supply natural gas to Ukraine, as Azerbaijan needs energy independent Ukraine.
Azerbaijani ambassador to Ukraine Eynulla Madatli said this during a round table meeting on the "Role of the Black Sea-Caspian region for European and global security" in Kiev, Ukrinform said today.
"We will fulfil everything we promised to Ukraine," the ambassador said. "We have a clear policy towards that country. We try to play an important role in the energy security of this country because we need a strong, energy independent Ukraine."
Madatli said that Kiev and Baku signed a memorandum in early 2011. According to it, Azerbaijan pledged to supply gas to Ukraine to the amount of five billion cubic meters beginning from 2017.
Azerbaijan plans to significantly increase its own gas production after 2017 by launching the Shah Deniz-2 field development. Until that time, Ukraine must build its own LNG-terminal to be able to receive gas from Azerbaijan via the Black Sea, the ambassador said.
He said that today it is necessary to construct an LNG-terminal in Georgia and part of the pipeline which would connect the terminal with the existing gas transportation line to supply Azerbaijani natural gas.
