The gas consumption in the countries of the European Union has increased by 4.6 percent and stood at 402.1 billion cubic meters in 2015, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2016.

The EU accounted for 11.5 percent of the world's total gas consumption in 2015.

BP said that the world's total gas consumption stood at 3.468 trillion cubic meters in 2015. The gas consumption in the EU has decreased by a total of 97.4 billion cubic meters in 2005-2015, according to BP's estimations.

Europe has imported 401.4 billion cubic meters of gas via pipelines in 2015, said the company.

European countries imported 159.8 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia, while 109.5 billion cubic meters and 40.6 billion cubic meters were imported from Norway and the Netherlands, respectively, said BP's report.

Currently, the main factor of the EU energy policy is the diversification of sources and routes of gas supply.

In this regard, the Southern Gas Corridor, which envisages the gas supply from the Caspian Sea region to Europe, is one of the priority projects for the EU.

The gas produced as part of the Phase 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is the main source for this project. Other sources can also be connected to this project at a later stage.
