Electricity export from Azerbaijan via the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey energy bridge may reach 700 million megawatts, said Azerbaijani Energy Minister Natig Aliyev in his article published by the official press Oct. 20.

“The work on the creation of the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey energy bridge is continuing,” noted Natig Aliyev. “The project will allow integrating energy systems of the three countries and entering the European market in the future. The volume of electricity export within the project may reach 700 million megawatts.”

The minister added that work is being carried out to connect the energy systems of Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran.

“Technical and political situation for the project’s implementation is satisfying,” he said, adding that the emergence of a new market, electricity transit and swap with other countries are among the advantages of the project.

Electricity will be exported from Russia to Azerbaijan and further to Iran via the North-South energy corridor.

The connecting of the three countries’ energy systems will create an opportunity to expand export and import operations. Azerbaijan will strengthen its positions as an exporter and transit country.

A memorandum of understanding on electricity swap was signed between Iran and Azerbaijan in December 2015.
