Volume of cargo transshipment via Kazakhstan’s ports in the direction of Caspian Sea countries amounted to nearly 4.4 million tons of cargo during first nine months of 2019, including 1.6 million tons of oil, a representative of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure told Trend.

Thus, according to the representative, existing capacity of country’s sea ports provides for transshipment of oil cargo to reach up to 13 million tons a year, of dry cargo to 5.5 million tons and ferry cargo to eight million tons, including handling of up to 300,000 containers.

Furthermore, as noted by the minister, the volume of transshipment of grain cargo and train cargo is steadily increasing.

“Thus, grain cargo increased by 51 percent and trains by 15 percent,” the official said.

In its turn, transshipment of container cargo increased by 67 percent from 12,672 TEU to 21,100 TEU, whereas the transshipment of wheeled vehicles increased by 65 percent (from 3,796 units to 6,246 units).

Currently there are two seaports in Kazakhstan: Aktau port and Kuryk port, both located in the Kazakhstan sector of the Caspian Sea.

Aktau Sea Port is located on the east coast of the Caspian Sea at the intersection of several international transport corridors, thereby providing the transportation of dry cargo, crude oil and oil products from east to west, from north to south and back in the direction of Iran, Turkey, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan.

Kuryk Port is located on the coast of the Caspian Sea, south of Aktau city. The port has direct access to the railway tracks. The ferry complex of the port is designed for transshipment of goods, including grain, petroleum products, fertilizers and chemicals.
