Hopefully, green energy to be developed on Azerbaijan's liberated lands - Brenda Shaffer

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 6

Trend:

Hopefully, ‘green’ energy projects will be implemented in the territories of Azerbaijan liberated from the Armenian occupation, a faculty member of the US Naval Postgraduate School Brenda Shaffer told Trend, commenting on the potential for the development of energy projects in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan.

“President Ilham Aliyev gave instructions to develop green energy in this region, and I am very happy to use the word ‘green’, not ‘renewable’ or ‘clean’ energy, which is so often used in the US,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer said that there is a tendency in the West to build renewable energy facilities, which, despite low emissions, harm the environment.

“I really hope that green energy projects will be implemented in the liberated territories [of Azerbaijan], which fits well with a beautiful geography of the liberated territories,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer noted that she visited Jabrayil region, saw the Khudaferin bridge. She also mentioned a big hydroelectric power station built in the area during the occupation.

"The hydroelectric power plant has had a huge destruction to the nature. It is important to know that the territory of the Araz River, over which the Khudaferin bridge was erected, was a wonderful and historical place,” she said.

Shaffer emphasized that in some places, it is better to see the gas pipeline underground than huge ‘renewable’ hydroelectric power plants that destroy the natural beauty of the area.

In addition, Shaffer noted that the security of the energy infrastructure is an extremely important issue.

“Together with experts from the US Naval Graduate School at NATO, we are discussing how to protect infrastructure in Azerbaijan and how to deal with various security threats to the energy infrastructure in Azerbaijan, which links the country with its neighbors, Georgia and Turkey,” Shaffer said.
