SOCAR’s STAR Refinery expands its list of oil grades

STAR Oil Refinery of Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR in Turkey has refined 20 grades of oil in 2021, Head of the SOCAR Turkey Refinery and Petrochemicals Business Unit, director general of Petkim petrochemical complex Anar Mammadov said in an exclusive interview with Trend.

He pointed out the refinery added seven new grades to its list in 2021 and the total number of oil grades refined since 2019 reached 29.

“We import crude oil from Russia, Iraq, Norway, as well as Egypt, West African countries, Greece and Israel. The crude oil we import from Russia is produced by this country, as well as Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, while the oil coming from Egypt is primarily produced by Arabic countries,” Mammadov explained.

STAR Refinery, with investment value of $6.3 billion came on stream in October 2018. Around $3.3 billion of the project’s cost was covered by loans. The total investment in Star Refinery is expected to stand at $7 billion.

The annual processing capacity of STAR Refinery is 10 million tons. It meets around 25 percent of Turkey’s refined oil products.
