BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 28. Clean energy transition will be a response to the global energy crisis, said the IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol during the ministerial meeting, Trend reports.

“Fossil fuels are stubborn. It is difficult to change, but this doesn’t mean that it is impossible. I believe that we’re experiencing the first global energy crisis. We had oil crisis in 1973-1974, another oil crisis in 1979-1980, and now, we’re having oil and natural gas crisis and maybe others joining that. The previous crises led to economic hardships. We see the same today: inflation is surging, economic growth is slowing down. What we also saw in the crisis during 1970s was the response to that crisis,” he said.

Birol went on to add that global energy efficiency never increased as much as it increased as a result of that response.

“My bet is the response to the global energy crisis will be acceleration of clean energy transition. It will be renewables, hydrogen, electric cars. It is going to accelerate the clean energy transition and the main driver may not be only the climate change, but energy security. Energy security will not be a break, but accelerate clean energy transition as a response to what we’re experiencing now,” IEA Executive Director added.
