Majority of cashless operations accounts for cash withdrawals in Kazakhstan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 12

By Nargiz Sadikhova – Trend:

Kazakhs have carried out nearly 2 billion cashless operations worth 23 trillion tenge ($52.9 billion) over the period from Jan. through Sept. 2020, which is 2.6 times more in volume than during the same period of last year, Trend reports citing Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

The National Bank said that against the background of the temporary suspension of the activities of a number of business entities due to the state of emergency in April 2020, a decrease in the volume of non-cash transactions was recorded.

However, starting in May, the volume of non-cash payments has increased by an average of 12 percent month-on-month. The volume of cash withdrawals however accounts for no more than a third of the overall volume of card transactions.

The share of online transactions in the structure of non-cash payments is also increasing (payments via Internet banking and via mobile applications). Thus, the share of the online transactions over the course of 9M2020 was 81 percent as compared to 67 percent over 9M2019.

On average, over nine months of 2020, the daily volume of online payments amounted to more than 68 billion tenge ($156.6 million), and 4 million transactions per day.

Since the beginning of the year, the number of active users of mobile banking has also increased. Thus, the number of active Internet banking users amounted to 12 million as of the end of Sept. as compared to 8 million in Jan.

To date, the total number of active payment cards is 25 million and for the most part, they were used for non-cash payments and withdrawals in Sept. Over the past nine months of this year, Kazakh banks have issued 12 million payment cards.
