Uzbekistan’s 2020 expenses for social support significantly exceed approved parameters

Some 8.5 trillion soums ($812 million) were spent from Uzbekistan State budget for social benefits, material assistance to low-income families, and compensation payments, which is 30 percent more than the approved parameters, Trend reports referring to the press service of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis (parliament) of Uzbekistan

These data were announced during an expanded meeting of the committees of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis on science, education, and health, as well as on women and gender equality, dedicated to the preliminary discussion of the Law of Uzbekistan "On the State Budget of Uzbekistan for 2021".

It was noted that in 2020 the state budget expenditures on education will amount to 31.2 trillion soums ($2.99 billion) and it is expected that compared with the approved parameters of all expenditures of the State budget will increase by 4.2 percent.

This year, 5,000 low-income families in need of better housing conditions, including women with disabilities, have received initial cash contributions of 116 billion soums ($11.1 million) for the purchase of affordable housing on the basis of mortgage loans.

In addition, 324 billion soums ($31.1 million) have been allocated to the Public Works Fund, in order to attract the unemployed and partially employed part of the population for temporary work. Of them, 200 billion soums ($19.2 million) were allocated from the Anti-Crisis Fund.

At the same time, to support the population, ensure their employment based on wide involvement in paid public works and in the sphere of entrepreneurship, 550 billion soums ($52.7 billion) will be allocated to the Public Works Fund, 350 billion soums ($33.6 million) to the State Fund for Promotion of Employment of the Population, 120 billion soums ($11.5 million) - to the State Trust Fund for Support of Women and Family.

Some 454 billion soums ($43.5 million) from the State budget were allocated for the provision of social protection and material support to low-income families during the fight against the spread of coronavirus infection in 2020, minors with disabilities and orphans from 410,000 families included in the Iron Notebook.

Furthermore, 1.9 trillion soums ($182 million) were allocated from the state budget to provide affordable housing for low-income strata of the population, to finance the construction of apartment buildings in cities and rural areas.

The senators stressed that during a pandemic, large-scale work is being carried out to restore the economy, primarily through strong social protection and ensuring the health of the population.
