By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Turkey allocated a grant of 100 million lira (approximately $17.5 million) within the frame of military assistance to Georgia in 2020, Trend reports via Georgian media.

The grant also includes overhauling of the military airport in Marneuli. This assistance amounts to 46.9 million lari ($14.1 million) at the current exchange rate.

According to the report of the Parliamentary Defense Committee, these funds should be used within the next 5 years. Georgia will receive Turkish-made equipment, in addition to which it is planned to modernize Marneuli Airport.

The agreement sets out the principles of supplying 100 million Turkish lira based on the military-financial cooperation between the Government of Georgia and the Government of the Republic of Turkey.

"According to the agreement, military goods and services should be procured with the allocated funds, preferably from local firms and companies operating in Turkey. The government also includes modernization of Marneuli Airport in accordance with the protocol to be implemented in the field of logistics”, the document reads.

As part of a military cooperation grant, Turkey donated 35 buses and 12 armored excavators to the Georgian Defense Forces on November 27, 2020.
