BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. As part of COP29 in Baku, Trend News Agency proudly presents COP for Hope, a special project offering an unparalleled platform to hear from world leaders and trailblazers in politics, economics, science, and ecology, all united by a shared commitment to addressing today’s pressing climate challenges.
The head of the Palestinian youth group on climate negotiations, Mohammed Usrof, told Trend on the sidelines of the COP29 in Baku.
"The focus is on building alliances with the Global South and North, with youth, indigenous peoples, and individuals from vulnerable communities, and so on.
This is a space to represent them and achieve justice. There cannot be justice without human rights, and there cannot be climate justice without human rights," he said.
Usrof also emphasized the need for society to clarify and discuss the concept of human rights within the climate context.
"I believe we live in a world where the actions of one person can cause real harm to millions, while one negotiation topic can benefit many. This is why so many people are interested in these talks," he added.
The opening ceremony of the much-anticipated COP29 conference has kicked off today at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
The highest-level event within COP29, the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, will take place on November 12-13.
To note, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed in June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The “COP” (Conference of the Parties) is the highest governing body responsible for overseeing the convention’s implementation.
A total of 198 countries participate in the convention. Unless otherwise agreed, COP is held annually. The first COP took place in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
