BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. Nuclear energy should occupy a prominent role at COP29, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi told reporters on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Trend reports.

"This conference stands out as one of the most pivotal events of the year. As COP29 unfolds, there is a palpable sense of anticipation regarding the potential for new agreements and the initiation of key commitments established last year in Dubai. The optimism surrounding these developments is unmistakable. We are excited to be part of this event, particularly given the crucial role that nuclear energy is poised to play in our discussions," Grossi noted.

The IAEA chief also emphasized the need for a measured and equitable approach to facilitate the transition towards a decarbonized future.

"There is a growing international consensus that the transition to new energy sources must be managed in an orderly manner, allowing each country to determine its own unique solutions. Instant fixes do not exist; rather, it is crucial to take into account the economic, social, labor, and other factors that impact the energy choices nations make. As part of this discussion, we believe that nuclear energy should assume an increasingly significant role in the energy landscape. This is the driving force behind our presence here today," he added.

To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has started in Baku. The decision was made at the plenary session of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
