Uzbekistan introduces recycling fees for cars

Uzbekistan has announced the introduction of recycling fee for vehicles from August 1 2020, Trend reports citing the Uzbek Ministry of Justice.

The list of cars and the fee amount has been approved. Companies and individuals who import cars to Uzbekistan or sell them on the territory of the country are considered fee payers.

The fee amount ranges from $600,000 to $30,000 depending on the engine volume.

Amendments providing for the introduction of a recycling fee were made to the Nature Conservation Act and the Waste Act.

According to the State Committee on Environmental Protection, on average, about 17,500 passenger cars are imported to Uzbekistan per year.

The annual volume of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere by vehicles is about 1.5 million tons in Uzbekistan.

Earlier, government of Uzbekistan abolished the excise duty on the import of cars.

Car industry occupies one of the leading places in the economy of Uzbekistan. A significant number of the country’s population is employed in this sector of industry. The vast majority of automotive enterprises in Uzbekistan are joint ventures with foreign partners.

The main production companies are GM Uzbekistan, SamAvto, JV MAN Auto-Uzbekistan and GM Powertrain Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan has been a member of the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA) since 1998.
