Iran can use Chabahar-Zahedan railway route to transfer CIS cargoes to the Oman Sea as well as the via India-Russia rail network, the CEO of the Iranian Railways (RAI) said.

"This road is one of the most important parts of the country's rail network, which, in addition to its regional and national importance, plays a crucial role in the north-south corridor leading to the port of Chabahar,” Saeed Rasouli said, Trend reports citing IRNA.

The CEO added that due to the lack of connection of Chabahar Port to the railway network, no cargo could be transited on this route.

Rasouli noted that the Supreme Leader ordered allocating 300 million Euros from the resources of the National Development Fund to finance the project adding that the 628-kilometer-long railway line will connect Chabahar to Zahedan and the national railway network.

“This route can also be used to transit cargos from the Oman Sea and India to Russia,” he said.

"I hope that the Rashr-Astara railway will be connected to Chabahar railway soon," he added.

The construction of the Zahedan-Chabahar railway has officially begun on July 7. The railway crosses over the port of Chabahar, the citiesof Tiss, Konarak, Nikshahr, Iranshahr, Khash and Zahedan, and then connects to Zabul and Milak on the Afghan border.

It is expected that Chabahar–Zahedan railway would create 13,000 jobs. Chabahar Port is Iran's only oceanic port that would connect to the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
