The interested government authorities of Kazakhstan and China held meeting to negotiate on the functioning of checkpoints on the border between the countries amid the COVID-19 pandemic on January 29, 2021, Trend reports referring to press service of the State Revenue Committee under the Ministry of Finance.

"The Kazakh delegation was headed by the chairman of the State Revenue Committee Marat Sultangaziyev, and the Chinese side – by the first deputy chairman of the government of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Zhang Chunlin," the press service said.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Healthcare, Industry and Infrastructure Development, Trade and Integration, Agriculture, the Border Guard Service of the National Security Committee, National Railway Company of Kazakhstan, as well as heads of interested state bodies of the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China.

According to the press service, during the negotiations, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to the previously reached agreements at a high level, aimed at strengthening transport and communication interconnection and interregional contacts, helping to improve the quality of trade and economic cooperation.

"As a result of the negotiations, the parties agreed to take joint measures to increase the throughput at road and railway checkpoints of the Kazakh-Chinese state border, to carry out anti-epidemic measures in relation to vehicles and cargo," the press service noted.

The Chinese representatives pointed out that in order to restore the operation of checkpoints on the Chinese side, additional construction work must be carried out to ensure the anti-epidemic security of the checkpoints. The first half of 2021 was appointed as the term to restore the operation of the temporarily closed checkpoints ‘Maykapchagai’ – ‘Zimunay’, ‘Kalzhat’ – ‘Dulaty’.

The next meeting is scheduled for February 8, 2021 to summarize the interim results of the implementation of the reached agreements.
