BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 22
By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
The number of passengers who took regular or charter flights from Batumi International Airport has increased 16 percent from January through May 2021 year-on-year, said Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava, Trend reports via Georgian media.
According to her, Batumi International Airport is the first airport of Georgia where the number of passengers has increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Batumi International Airport has recently expanded and is now capable of serving 1.2 million passengers annually. Passenger flow in 2019 reached more than 600,000 people.
In total, $17 million was invested in the project which employed about 300 locals.
"There are 100-105 flights a week at Batumi International Airport, which is about the same number as it was in the same period of 2019. This is a very good sign. We expect that Tbilisi and Kutaisi international airports will soon reach the same level as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic," Turnava said.
