Iranian envoy rules out Russia's finance in Rasht-Astara railway project

TEHRAN, Iran, May 31. Iranian ambassador in Russia Kazem Jalali has ruled out news of Moscow financing the construction of the Rasht- Astara railway, Trend reports citing ILNA.

"There is no agreement between Iran and Russia over the financing of the Rasht – Astara railway construction, although there is ongoing negotiation for cooperation," he said.

The envoy pointed out that the Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development has proposed the purchase of 200 locomotives from Russia.

Following Iranian President's visit to Moscow in February 2022, Iran's minister of economic affairs has announced an agreement on a $5-billion credit line and financing of the Rasht- Astara railway by Russia.

The construction of the Rasht-Astara railway project plays a role in finalizing The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
