Azerbaijan sees growth in cargo, passenger traffic by all transport modes

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 8. Azerbaijan’s freight traffic by all transport modes amounted to 176.7 million tons from January through October 2022, up by 12.6 percent compared to the same period of 2021, the State Statistical Committee of Azerbaijan told Trend.

The Committee said that 57 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 30.5 percent – by pipeline, 8.7 percent – by rail, 3.6 percent – by sea, and 0.2 percent – by air.

During the reporting period, cargo movement in the private sector increased by 12.4 percent against the first ten months of 2021. The mentioned sector accounted for 78 percent of the overall freight transport volume.

Meanwhile, passenger traffic in Azerbaijan exceeded 1.318 billion people, which was 37.4 percent more than in the same period of 2021. Most of the passengers (86.9 percent) were transferred by road, 12.7 percent – by metro, and 0.4 percent – by other types of transport.

In the reporting period, the rail cargo transportation made up 15.3 million tons (an increase of 24.8 percent) whereas passenger transportation totaled nearly 3.967 million people (growth of 89 percent).

A total of 6.317 million tons of cargo were transported by sea, up by 40.9 percent against January through October 2021. The share of oil in the total freight traffic volume was 42 percent.

The cargo handled in the Azerbaijani ports during this time exceeded 9.7 million tons, out of which 92.3 percent or over 8.96 million tons fell on transit goods. As of November 1, 2022, the amount of remaining goods reached 335,000 tons.

In the period under review, 100.9 million tons of freight were transported by road, growing by 11.9 percent compared to the same period of 2021. In addition, passenger carriage by this transport mode exceeded 1.145 billion people (an increase of 27.1 percent).

Besides, 167.4 million passengers were transported by Baku Metro (growth of three times).

Over 1.88 million passengers were transported by air from January through October 2022, which was 2.1 times more than in the same period of 2021.

Meantime, air freight totaled 347,800 tons, falling by 15.3 percent year over year.
