BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 21. Cooperation between “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” (KTZ), the national railway operator, and OneWeb, a global communications company, will provide high-speed satellite connection to cargo and passenger trains operating in Kazakhstan, a source at KTZ told Trend.

Earlier, KTZ and OneWeb signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the provision of high-speed connectivity to the national railway operator of Kazakhstan. The document was signed during the Digital Almaty-2023 annual high-technology forum. Under the conditions of the document, the KTZ and OneWeb will cooperate in the communications sector.

“The MoU provides our company with the opportunity to establish close cooperation and exchange of experience with OneWeb, a global satellite communications company providing governments and enterprises with high bandwidth and low latency broadband, including in the terrestrial communication segment,” the KTZ representative said.

The KTZ representative added that satellite communication will also be provided to the branches where other means of providing connectivity are impossible to implement. Overall, Kazakhstan’s railway network will be completely covered by the services provided by OneWeb.

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy noted that there are several benefits to be had by enlisting the services of OneWeb.

“First, it is a high-speed broadband connection and low signal latency because the connection is provided through a global constellation of satellites located in low Earth orbit. Second, it is a more flexible business model for working with local telecommunications partners and business customers. And, the third benefit is a strategic decision by OneWeb to locate its ground satellite station and point of presence gateway in Kazakhstan,” the source concluded.
