ASTANA, Kazakhstan, October 27. There are 71.4 million payment cards in circulation in Kazakhstan as of September 1, 2023, Trend reports.
Data from Kazakhstan's National Bank shows that the most common are debit cards, their share is 80.3 percent, the share of credit cards is 16.9 percent.
The share of debit cards with a credit limit and prepaid cards accounted for 2.7 percent.
As of September 1, 18 banks and Kazpost JSC were issuing payment cards. These organizations issue and distribute payment cards of the international systems VISA International, MasterCard Worldwide, UnionPay International, American Express International and Diners Club International.
In addition, banks in Kazakhstan issue payment cards of local systems: local card of Citibank Kazakhstan - Citibank Kazakhstan JSC and Kaspi.kz payment card system - Kaspi Bank JSC.
The volume of transactions using payment cards of Kazakh issuers amounted to 14.9 trillion tenge (about $31.4 billion); the number of transactions was 1.03 billion in August 2023. The number of non-cash transactions increased by 27.6 percent and reached 1 billion transactions; the volume increased by 35.3 percent and reached 12.9 trillion tenge (about $27.2 billion).
As of September 1, 2022, there were 61.7 million payment cards in circulation in Kazakhstan.
The volume of non-cash card transactions in 2022 reached 102.8 trillion tenge (about $217 billion), an increase of 42.3 percent compared to 2021. The number of transactions increased by 38 percent to 8.5 billion transactions.
Cash issuance operations increased by 5.3 percent, from 20.7 trillion (about $43.7 billion) to 21.8 trillion tenge (about $46 billion). Thus, the number of non-cash card transactions exceeded cash issuance by 4.7 times. In the total volume, the share of non-cash transactions amounted to 82.5 percent, compared to 77.7 percent for the same period in 2021.
