Kazakhstan's Aktau port details major container hub construction (Exclusive)

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, December 14. The implementation of the project for the construction of a large container hub in Kazakhstan's Aktau port will be completed in 2025, a source at the port told Trend.

According to the source, a feasibility study for the project will be completed by the second quarter of 2024. Construction and installation work will then begin, with completion expected in 2025.

In the special economic zone of Aktau Seaport, 19 hectares of land (next to the area of the Aktau port) have been reserved for the project's implementation.

According to the source, the site's capacity for container transshipment with direct transshipment from rail to road transport will be 1,210 units per day, with 605 units per day for unloading containers to and from the site.

At the same time, the capacity of the site for repacking industrial cargo will be up to 672,000 tons per year, and for repacking consumer goods, it will be up to 465,000 tons per year.

The source noted that the estimated storage area will be 41,352 square meters, including 26,316 square meters for containers, 6,384 square meters for reefers, 1,950 square meters for dangerous goods, 1,950 square meters for cargo at customs control, 2,160 square meters for repacking industrial cargo in an open area, and 2,592 square meters for repacking consumer goods indoors.

In addition, the estimated capacity of the hub will be 5,616 TEU containers, including 300 TEU for dangerous goods, 300 TEU in the customs control zone, and 924 TEU for refrigerated containers.

Also on the territory of the container hub, there will be workshops for the repair of handling equipment and the repair and certification of containers.

Meanwhile, the total cargo turnover of the Aktau port amounted to 3.785 million tons from January through October 2023, which is 22 percent more than the same period in 2022 (3.109 million tons).

Thus, in the first 10 months of this year, oil transshipment amounted to 3.012 million tons, which is 54 percent more than in the same period in 2022 (1.957 million tons).

At the same time, grain transshipment decreased from 384,000 tons in 2022 to 162,000 in 2023.

In addition, the transshipment of metal increased by 142,000 tons (an increase of 48 percent), ferry cargo by 9,000 tons (an increase of three times), and other cargo by 459,000 tons (an increase of 31 percent).
