Kazakhstan airs deadline for border checkpoint revamp with Kyrgyzstan

ASTANA, Kazakhstan, April 19. The modernization of checkpoints on the border of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan will be completed by 2028, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said, Trend reports.

He made the remark during a joint briefing with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Zhaparov for the media.

"Specific steps are being taken to increase the possibility of transporting goods across borders and improve clearance. Karasu, Besagash, Aukhatty, Sartobe, Aisha Bibi, Sypatai Batyr, and Kegen checkpoints are now being modernized. All of these checkpoints will include digital technology. This gigantic undertaking is projected to be finished by 2028," he said.

In addition, Tokayev noted that countries have reached an understanding to create favorable conditions for the effective operation of joint ventures.

"As you can see, the Agreement on Mutual Protection of Investments was signed today. We committed to adopting and enhancing the e-government system, as well as to trading experiences for economic digitization and information collaboration. One of the major goals is to strengthen contacts between the two countries," he said.

Meanwhile, the volume of trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan amounted to $1.6 billion, which is 26 percent more than the previous year.

The share of Kazakhstani exports is almost 69 percent, or $1.1 billion (an increase of 35.8 percent). Imports: $495.2 million (an increase of 9 percent).
