ASTANA, Kazakhstan, June 3. China Nonferrous Metal Mining Co. Ltd. will build a copper smelter plant with a capacity of 300,000 tons of copper per year in Kazakhstan, Trend reports.

According to the government of Kazakhstan, the corresponding agreement was signed between KAZ Minerals Smelting LLP, which acts as the customer, and China Nonferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd. (NFC) as a service provider for the design and purchase of technological equipment, and NFC Kazakhstan LLP as a contractor for construction and commissioning works.

The plant will be located near the settlement of Aktogay in the Abay region. Copper concentrate from the mining and processing facilities in Bozshakol and Aktogay as well as the Vostoktsvetmet LLP processing facilities will be the source of raw materials.

As a result of the construction of the plant, a cluster will be created that will unite one of the world's largest copper mines and modern copper smelting production.

The project, with a preliminary cost of $1.5 billion, will create more than 1,000 new jobs. Commissioning is planned before the end of 2028.

As the government noted, the high-tech enterprise for the production of high-value products will become the largest in the country. The technologies used in the field of copper smelting production comply with international environmental standards.

The enterprise will process copper cathode and raw materials containing copper to satisfy the needs of the internal market.

To note, China Nonferrous Metal Industry's Foreign Engineering and Construction Company Ltd. is a government-controlled company listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. The company participates in international project contracts and the development of non-ferrous metal resources.
