Kyrgyzstan has admitted to work having been carried out over the Uzbek border while installing power lines for the Charbak border post, KirTAG said on Tuesday citing special representative of the Kyrgyz government on delimitation issues, Kurbanbay Iskandarov.
"Kyrgyzstan's Charbak border post was opened in December 2012, but wasn't provided with electricity. When contractors were installing power lines to the gate, five pillars were placed on Uzbek side," Iskandarov said.
He said the pillars, which caused a conflict, were removed from the Uzbek territory, adding that the border post is still without electricity. He explained that Charbak is a delimited area on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border.
"The issue on this area was coordinated by intergovernmental agreements in the early '90s. However the border has not yet been demarcated although a commission is currently working on this," Iskandarov said.
He said that 50 kilometre long problematic sections remain around the Sokh enclave on the border with Uzbekistan. The total length of the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border is 1378 km, while more than 1000 km is delimited.
The incident took place when a large group of residents from the Uzbek village of Khushyar attacked Kyrgyz frontier guards who were installing supports for electricity transmission lines in Kyrgyzstan's Batken region on Sunday. The villagers tried to seize firearms from the frontier guards, injuring some in the process.
According to the Uzbek side, the conflict on the Uzbek-Kyrgyz border was provoked by the Kyrgyz frontier guards.
Criminal cases were initiated by Batken district prosecutor's office on the cases of taking hostages and attacks on the border post.
