DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, September 26. A total of 14,600 tons of cotton are planned to be harvested in the Spitamen district of the Sughd region of Tajikistan, Trend reports.

Approximately 5,800 hectares of cotton were planted in the Spitamen district in 2023. Additionally, over 3,500 hectares of wheat were also sown in the district.

In February 2023, representatives of the country's Ministry of Agriculture said that Tajikistan planned to sow cotton on 186,000 hectares. In 2022, only 181,500 hectares of land were used for cotton cultivation, not meeting the intended plan.

Orif Khojazoda, a representative of the ministry, emphasized that all agricultural enterprises, including farmers, cooperatives, and landowners, need to change their approach to land use. For instance, bringing unused land back into circulation, adopting modern agricultural technologies and drip irrigation, as well as utilizing privately collected rainwater for irrigation, are all essential steps.

Tajikistan annually harvests hundreds of thousands of tons of cotton, a significant portion of which is exported abroad without processing.

In January 2023, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan issued instructions to expand the light industry through the development of cotton production and textile industry processing.
