DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, January 24. The World Food Programme (WFP) extended humanitarian aid to 469,952 people in Tajikistan in December 2023, Trend reports.

According to the WFP, 51 percent of this support was directed towards men and 49 percent towards women. A total of 1,377 tons of food were provided, along with cash-based transfers totaling $182,506.

During the same month, WFP distributed 500 tons of food products to 5,800 vulnerable households as part of the unconditional food assistance initiative funded by USAID. This response aimed to address the escalating food insecurity situation in Tajikistan.

Additionally, in December 2023, WFP and the Government of Tajikistan inked a Memorandum of Understanding, signifying their commitment to deepening cooperation in addressing food and nutrition security in Tajikistan from 2024 to 2026.

WFP has actively been involved in Tajikistan since 1993, it is now operating under the Country Strategic Plan (2023-2026) initiated in January 2023.

This strategic plan outlines specific objectives for the upcoming years, with a focus on improving the livelihoods, resilience, and adaptive capacities of food-insecure and vulnerable populations in both urban and rural areas. The plan places particular emphasis on enhancing climate-resilient and nutrition-sensitive agricultural and food value chains by 2026.
