IRENA notes flux in Tajikistan's renewables over quinquennium

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, March 27. Tajikistan’s total renewable energy capacity reached 5,763 MW in 2023, Trend reports.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable energy capacity in the country remained the same in 2022 and increased by 0.31 percent compared to 2021 (5,745 MW).

This figure also rose by 0.33 percent compared to 5,744 MW in 2020 and 2019, and surged by 15.63 percent compared to 2018 (4,984 MW).

The Ministry of Economic Development of Tajikistan reported that electricity generation reached 21.9 billion kWh in 2023, which is a 2.2-percent increase over 2022.

Data from the National Statistical Agency under the President of Tajikistan indicates that electricity exports amounted to over $110.4 million in 2023, a 3.9-percent increase compared to 2022, with electricity exports representing 4.5 percent of the country's total export volume.

Moreover, President Emomali Rahmon said in his address summarizing 2023 that Tajikistan aims to commission the third block of the Rogun hydroelectric power station by 2025. To achieve this goal, more than 5 billion somoni ($457.760 million) was allocated from the state budget in 2023, with 15,000 specialists, workers, and 3,500 units of construction equipment currently operating on the project.

Rahmon also highlighted that the country aims to fully provide electricity generation from renewable sources by 2032.
