The presidential elections in Turkmenistan, to be held on Feb. 12, 2012, will be observed not only by local, but also by invited international experts and observers, the Turkmen government said on Tuesday.
The report was given at the meeting of the Turkmen Central Electoral and Referendum Commission.
"During the meeting, participants discussed a number of organizational issues related to the important socio-political campaign, which will be observed not only by the country's non-governmental organizations, such as the National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, under the president of Turkmenistan, but also by invited international experts and observers", the report says.
MPs earlier declared that the next presidential elections in Turkmenistan will be held based on the country's Constitution and "provided with international electoral standards of the UN and the OSCE".
The necessary documents, including sample ballots for the presidential election, alternative candidate certificates (for the upper-level state positions and authorized representatives), and various materials for observers and Turkmenistan's citizens were approved during the last CEC meeting.
Previously, Ashgabat city staff regional and district election commissions were approved. At present, the formation of district electoral commissions is underway, after which the appropriate staff will be approved.

The material technical base at newly formed polling stations will be improved in the near future. "Today large-scale organizational work was launched and will be carried out every day in strict compliance with the approved schedule".

Turkmenistan's current president Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov said recently at a government meeting that "the upcoming presidential elections in Turkmenistan should take place in an atmosphere of openness and publicity".
According to the country's Constitution, a Turkmen president can be a citizen born in Turkmenistan. The candidate must be at least forty years old, though not older than seventy, know the state language, have lived in Turkmenistan during the past fifteen years, worked in state bodies, public associations, enterprises, institutions and organizations.
A single presidential term lasts five years.
