The Institute of International Relations under the Turkmen Foreign Ministry and regional office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Central Asia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Ashgabat, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported on Friday.

This memorandum should strengthen cooperation which started in 2009 and anticipates a qualitatively new approach to the further development of ties on a bilateral and multilateral basis taking into consideration the curriculum of the Institute and national priorities.

Chief of the regional office of the ICRC in Central Asia Ives Arnoldi who is on a working visit to Asghabat was received by the country's foreign ministry.

It was noted at the meeting that the partnership has already managed to implement a number of joint programmes and projects as part of the agenda of the state policy of Turkmenistan and ICRC strategy.

This aims primarily at spreading and improving knowledge about norms and principles of international humanitarian law as defined by the Geneva Convention of 1949. Turkmenistan ratified this convention in 1992. The country has gone through a period of radical reforming of the national legislative key aspects and the implementation of international legal acts.

The Institute of International Relations was opened in 2008 and prepares specialists in the fields of international relations and diplomacy, international law and overseas economic relations.
