The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan has announced the final results of the elections of deputies of the Turkmen Mejlis (Parliament) to replace retired parliamentarians.

The Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of Turkmenistan has announced the final results of the elections of deputies of the Turkmen Mejlis (Parliament) to replace retired parliamentarians.

"The elections were held on the principles of transparency and openness," the commission said.

According to the statement, the June 2 elections were attended by about 94,000 people residing in the mentioned districts which accounted for over 81 per cent of the total number of registered voters.

The election was declared valid at all 109 polling stations.

The Central Election Commission registered the following deputies to replace those retired: Chairman of the National Centre of Trade Unions of Turkmenistan, chairman of the central board of the Women's Union of Turkmenistan M.Yazmuhammedova - electoral district No. 7 in Ashgabat, Chairman of the Central Council of the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan O.Mammedova - electoral district No. 25, Akhal velayat(Region), Chairman of the Central Council of Youth Organisation of Turkmenistan O.Enermyradova - electoral district No. 83 in Lebap velayat, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Turkmen State University V.Orazdyrbayeva - electoral district No. 89 in Lebap, Deputy Chairman of the Mary velayat association of trade unions of Turkmenistan K.Gurbanova - electoral district No. 103 of the Mary velayat.

The statement did not include the complete list of names.

Early elections were caused by the appointment of some members of the national parliament of Turkmenistan to positions of responsibility whereby they left the deputy corps.

The mandate of the people's trust in each constituency was claimed by two or more candidates including representatives of government agencies and leading experts of various sectors of the national economy.

The term of office of the Mejlis deputies is five years. The main current composition was elected in December 2008.

Under the Constitution of Turkmenistan, parliament passes laws, introduces changes and additions to the law, approves the state budget, decides on a referendum and calls a presidential election as well as elections of the members of Parliament and members of representative bodies.

It also considers the appointment and dismissal of the President of the Supreme Court, Attorney General and Minister of Interior and Minister of Justice under a proposal by the head of state. It also ratifies and denounces international treaties, decides on changes of the state border and the administrative-territorial division of the country.
