A provision on national sea carriers is being prepared in Turkmenistan, Trend reports referring to the Turkmen Dovlet Khabarlary state news agency.
This issue was discussed at a meeting of the country’s government. In particular, the Turkmen State Service of Maritime and River Transportation is preparing a document, according to which the "Marine Merchant Fleet" closed joint-stock company will be indicated as the national sea carrier.
President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stressed the strategic importance of the Turkmenbashi international port for all Central Asian and Caspian countries. The opening ceremony of the port was held in May 2018.
The project has been designed in accordance with the GreenPort international standard.
The annual throughput capacity of the port will be 17-18 million tons. Together with the existing port, this figure will be 25-26 million tons. After the new port is commissioned, great opportunities have appeared for transporting cargo supplying to Turkmenbashi along the Silk Road route from the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and then to the European countries via the ports of Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran.
