The Railways Agency of Turkmenistan will invest in the reconstruction and modernization of the railway infrastructure in 2022, Trend reports, citing Turkmen media.

The Agency, together with the “Demirýollary” railway operating company, plans to proceed with the construction of a number of bridges on the Mary-Serkhetabat railway line and over the Kushka River.

These projects will be carried out within the framework of the requirements of the president of Turkmenistan on the need to increase the capacity of the Afghanistan-Turkmenistan-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey-Europe route. With the commissioning of these facilities, the average local speed of trains will significantly increase.

The work is also underway for the launch of electric locomotives or trains, the Agency said.

Also, the modernization and electrification of the Ashgabat-Dushak railway section will be carried out with funds from the Asian Development Bank.

Meanwhile, currently, a new bridge, the total length of which is about 1,900 meters, is being built on the 4,975 kilometers railway in the Balkan region. The bridge will have high water transmission capacity, seismic stability and operational reliability.
