BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 4. The US intends to support Turkmenistan in developing an investment plan to reduce and control methane emissions in the oil and gas sector in 2023, Trend reports via the US Department of State.

This is stated in a joint statement by US Department of State Acting Assistant Secretary Elizabeth Horst and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov on April 24, made on April 24, 2023, following the results of the ninth round of US-Turkmenistan Annual Bilateral Consultations held in Washington.

According to the information, the parties during the meeting stressed the importance of combating climate change, in particular, by reducing methane emissions.

It was noted that in order to advance this work, the US and Turkmenistan will form a working group on the mitigation of methane emissions and will try to present the results of the mitigation of methane emissions at the UN Climate Change Conference.

Furthermore, in a joint statement, the parties announced their intention to cooperate in the deployment of solutions for detecting methane emissions leaks, and further repair of the corresponding infrastructure.

At the end of the meeting, Acting Assistant Secretary Horst and Foreign Minister Meredov expressed their desire to build on the high-level bilateral meetings and hold the next round of annual bilateral consultations in the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, in 2024.
