France proposes oil embargo, bank sanctions against Iran

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday laid out a series of proposed sanctions against Iran, as the world continues to ponder how to respond to the threat of a potentially nuclear-armed Iran, dpa reported.

The proposals include a freeze on the holdings of the Iranian central bank and a ban on oil shipments out of the country. The proposed measures were included in a letter sent to the leaders of the United States, Germany, Japan, Britain, Canada and the European Union.

The proposal also says Iran must not threaten any of its neighbours.

In light of the nuclear threat, hinted at in a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency last week, France said the situation called for sanctions on a scale not before seen.

The move comes the same day that Britain cut all ties to Iranian banks.
